Rally or Reset

I may have to go pick Nick up from Boy Scout camp today.  He ate too much junk food, didn't take his medicine, and made himself sick.   I'm really sad for him about this.  Camp is supposed to be the time of your life, the best days.

Mike texted me at 5:30 this morning.  He's not doing very well either.  He was up with Nick last night until 2:00 am.  I should be going back to sleep, because I don't want to fall asleep driving if I need to go.  I just can't seem to settle back in.  I know Mike is exhausted and worried or he would have thought about not waking me up this morning.

Somehow, I laid in bed, trying to go back to sleep, thinking about global warming.  Is that crazy?  My boy is sick at camp.  I'm going to have to drive two hours to go get him and I can't sleep because I'm thinking about global warming.

Oh, you know how it is.  When you can't help someone in the situation they're in, sometimes you get to thinking about some other problem.

See, people are suffering in the heat in the rest of the country.  Not enough has been done and the climate is changing.  Most of the United States has experienced incredible temperatures for quite a few summers in a row.  Is it too late to fix it?  Some argue that it is.

I think it's more like how you react when you have a paper due that's worth half your grade in one class and you've procrastinated.  You have a quiz in another class tomorrow and this paper is due on Friday and you're still studying for the quiz.  You think that there's no way you can back up and finish the paper now, so you let everything slide for another day while you worry about it.

Then you rally.  You ditch studying for the quiz and get a B anyway since you've been paying attention in that class.  You almost decide to ditch your other classes altogether, but figure that won't help.  You eat, sleep, and write this paper.  You have most of the information you need at the library, so you live there, sometimes falling asleep at the study carrell.  When you wake up, you're identifiable as a sleeper because of the big red dot on your forehead where it was resting on your book.  You do what you need to do.  Somehow, you manage to do in three days what should have taken you three weeks to do.

Right now, in the global warming problem, the deadline is looming.  We're not even sure when it will be too late.  We have procrastinated, but we're about to understand that it will be a nearly impossible project.  I believe we can still do it, but the whole world is going to have to pull together.  The wealthy won't be able to claim exceptions.  Everyone, if our children are going to survive this, is going to have to sacrifice. Will we pull it through in the end?

Or maybe we'll go down in flames and life will reset the way it did when dinosaurs ruled.  We get to decide in these next few years what we're going to do.

The verdict is in.  I'm drivng out to camp today.  Nick is coming home.

Thank you for listening, jb
